Looking for a baby name but not liking what you’re seeing on the typical websites or apps? I’ve got some weird ideas to share with you.

These are literally things I do to try get name ideas and I thought I’d share!

1. Spotify (Or wherever you get your music)
I’ve noticed a lot of artists on Spotify seem to have some really cool sounding names. I started to take note of some and then literally just look through playlists to scan artists names I like and jot them down. You can find new artists by searching different genres, moods, keywords and looking through playlists.
You can also try this but with song names and you might even end up finding both a name and a song you can play for your future baby!
To demonstrate this one I thought I would share some names I’ve found on Spotify!

2. IMDB
For this one you can begin by searching any TV show or movie you like or whatever comes to mind and looking at the list of cast and crew for the movie. You can check character names, actor names, director, writers, all crew!
Try scanning Indie films and artistic films for some unique names.

3. The Facebook Method (A little stalkerish)
This one is a little bit stalker-ish, I have to admit! But it is also a practical way to see a large amount of names in one place AND get an idea of what it’s like for a name to be used in real life on a real person (unless it’s a weird AI bot, who knows anymore am I right?).
For this method just search up any name you like and find people with that name as a launch pad to get started. If you want to look at French names for example, search up a French name. You can then look at their list of friends for more ideas. A lot of people have their friend list hidden or private so you may have to try a few different profiles. This feels so weird to suggest and IT IS WEIRD. But I do it. Don’t judge me.
You might then see these people on your suggested friend list for the next 7 months. But it’s all worth it. If you find something. If not… I guess you’re just a stalker.

4. Models.com
I said I noticed Spotify artists often have cool names. Well, I’ve also noticed fashion models ALSO tend to have some pretty cool names. SOME VERY COOL NAMES.
I’ll show you what I mean. I’m on the site right now have the urge to compile a list. You ever get that? Here’s a list of names I am seeing on this site and there are a lot I haven’t heard before.

5. Findagrave.com or visit a cemetery
This one might be more commonly used, but Findagrave.com is a site I have heard people say they use to find interesting names. You can also check out historical names and names from certain areas. I personally haven’t really used this particular method much for finding a name.
But while we’re talking about this some similar sites for finding names include….
6. Ancestry.com/Ancestry.ca
You can even write down names you like from your own family tree!
7. Newspapers.com
You do need to pay to use this site but can check out birth announcements and obituaries to get name ideas. I don’t really use it for this because there’s so much additional reading and searching rather than just seeing lists of names quickly like with some of the other methods. There are some articles where they list an entire class and all their names, etc. It can be useful if you’re looking for something historical from a particular area.
I believe there are also yearbook websites where you can look at old yearbooks and use that to find names too.
8. Government Released Name Lists
This is a great one!
In some areas the government puts out a list of names that have been used in a particular year. You can check out that as a great way to see lists of names and jot down any you like. Not every area does this. I’m in Canada and my province doesn’t do it, but Alberta does. They literally put out lists of all names used each year. I’m checking it out at the same time as writing this and there are a LOT of names.
Here’s the link:

9. Reddit
Another great place to get name ideas is Reddit. There are entire communities dedicated to talking about names. The most noteable is r/namenerds
You can also make your own post to get feedback on your names.
If you want to see which names to AVOID, check out r/tragedeigh

I hope this has helped you find original ways to look for names. There are so many out there just waiting to be discovered. And when you find the perfect name, hopefully it just clicks and you know it’s the one!
Let me know if there are any other unique, weird and yet great resources for checking out baby name ideas that I didn’t cover!
Happy naming!
